Accomplishments While in Office

  • Secured funding ($500,000 earmark through Congresswoman Ilhan Omar) to develop a 48-unit senior housing development at Sabathani Community Center.

  • Led on a Housing First, Harm Reduction Policy, and helped secure $17.5 million for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund and $5.5 million for the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority.

  • Secured funding to complete the D-Line, a Bus Rapid Transit infrastructure project, which is along the most-used bus route in the entire state of Minnesota.

  • Authored the ordinance creating the Community Commission on Police Oversight, which will establish a community safety continuum that integrates mental health resources.

  • Represented the City Council in negotiations with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights to develop an enforcement agreement that addresses the human rights violations of the Minneapolis Police Department and details recommendations for training and policy changes.

  • Helped secure $2 million for violence prevention and de-escalation training for officers.

  • Working with the community-led group 38th Street United to secure millions of dollars in resources for George Floyd Square and 38th Street businesses.

  • Advocated for and secured the first full-time Transgender Equity Coordinator at the City of Minneapolis, ensuring the Trans Equity Summit would continue to thrive and support the trans and gender nonconforming community in Minneapolis and beyond.

  • Co-authored an ordinance banning the destructive practice of conversion therapy in the City of Minneapolis.

  • Authored and passed a citywide resolution declaring racism a public health crisis.

  • Authored and passed a resolution to establish a process leading to the development of a truth and reconciliation commission.

  • Voted to support the Minneapolis 2040 Plan, which up-zones the entire city to facilitate the creation of multi-family housing in previously single-family-only areas as a means to redress the impacts of redlining in African American communities.

  • Selected to participate in a ten-city Anti-Displacement Policy Network by Policy Link, leading to the development of a Community Preference Policy, which ensures first rights of return for people of color.
